Godzilla fans might not rejoice with the latest update that HBO has given us. After releasing the listings for the forthcoming months, the streamer confirmed that Godzilla King Of The Monsters would not be a part of the content platform. Just after, fans began to connect all the dots with the latest announcement that Apple just made in regards to Godzilla. So, why is HBO refusing to renew the licensing rights? Will Apple TV+ take over? Here is everything to know about Godzilla’s future.
Warner Bros. released Godzilla King Of The Monsters in the year 2019. The movie was first released in China and then in the US. Heading for success, the movie swiped a large chunk of $386.6 Million globally. Later in March 2021, the sequel Godzilla Vs. Kong was launched. The success of this movie is what brought Apple TV to invest in the banner.
Godzilla King Of The Monsters: Exists HBO Max
It is a common process for streamers and media houses to announce exits and new listings for the coming months. Similarly, HBO Max recently released the culminated list of the new shows that it has licensed this month. One of the most shocking listings amongst them was the exit of Godzilla King Of The Monsters Anime movie. HBO confirmed that February was the final month when it lists the anime on its platform. This means that the movie will be here only until February 28, 2022. Plus, the content platform also refrained from suggesting how long this will last.
In case of uncertainty, it can only be assumed that this delisting is permanent. Most of it also depends on the fans. If the streaming numbers of the month of February are high enough, the company might decide to renew its contract with the distributors, Toho Co. and Legendary Entertainment.
Godzilla Anime Wing: Latest Updates
The last that Godzilla hit the screens in the animated genre was with the Godzilla Singular Point anime that came out in April 2021. After that, the renewal is still hanging. The most recent project that is underway is from the creators at Apple TV+. Last week, Deadline reported that the MonsterVerse would be returning to small screens with a new televised series. At the moment, neither the title nor an official announcement has followed this update. Plus, we also don’t know if this will be an addition to the animated wing.
As of now, it has been confirmed that Chris Black will be the executive producer of the project. Along with him, Matt Fraction will be the showrunner. Toho Company and Legendary Entertainment are also on board with the same. Apple recently shared that the success of Godzilla V Kong led them to pitch the makers for the series. This, in turn, led to the banner ditching HBO Max and going for a direct television instead. Fans are also wondering if HBO’s disowning is a result of Apple’s collaboration with Godzilla Anime.
Godzilla King Of The Monsters: Will Apple TV Pick Up The Movie?
Since Apple is one leading all the narrative, it is possible that they might acquire the rights to this movie as well. While it is unclear as to why HBO would not renew the project, it is certain that this is Apple’s time to take over. The content platform can certainly become a one-stop Godzilla stop now that Godzilla King Of The Monsters is left hanging without a digital streamer. There is no official announcement for the same. But we will be sure to update this section as soon as there is more news on the same.
