Almost four years after the debut season of Made In Abyss ended, the demand for a sequel still remains high. The last that fans saw of the franchise was in January 2020, when the Dawn of the Deep Soul film came out. Since then, the makers have remained silent regarding the release of Made In Abyss Season 2. The same was the case until recently when the makers announced the tentative release date of the sequel. So, when is the second season coming out? Here is all you need to know about it.
In May 2021, the official website of the anime announced the release window for the sequel. It was also confirmed that the second installment would be called “Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City.” The franchise is originally based on the 2012 manga by Akihito Tsukushi. The first season landed in 2017. Later, Kinema Citrus released a film series and one feature film in the franchise. Both of them were received with much love and appreciation by fans. Now, the wait is for the second installment.
Production Status
Made In Abyss Season 2 is currently in the final stages of production. The show was already renewed back in summer 2020. Currently, Sentai Filmworks has licensed the distribution rights of the second season. This usually happens when most of the post-production work of a project is almost complete, and the administrative team is given the space to work. Thus, it is clear that most of the work on the sequel is complete. The last bit of works like refining and editing remain in the process. Thus, it is only a matter of time before a trailer and teaser are released in the public domain.
Made In Abyss Season 2: Plot Details
The new season is officially titled “Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City.” The season will continue the story that was left up in the last season. The story will follow the events of the Dawn of the Deep Soul movie. In the new season, Riko and her companions will finally begin their quest in the Capital Of The Unreturned in the sixth layer. After escaping the horrors of the Narehate Village of Ilblu, Riko and the others will follow Meinya to the sixth layer of Abyss. Moreover, fans can expect to see Riko, Reg, and Nanachi countering Hollows in the upcoming arcs.
According to the original story from the manga, the sixth layer will take a huge toll on Riko. She is bound to lose Ren and Nanachi on her way to the Narehate Village. Moreover, the population of Hollows is even higher down in the sixth layer. Thus, reaching the destination will not be easy for the adventurer. The Golden City will also play an important role in the new edition. Lastly, fans can also expect to learn more about Ilblu and its creatures in the new season.
A Quick Recap!
The first season of Made in Abyss tells the story of Riko, the explorer who wants to explore the depths of the Abyss. Riko is the daughter of the White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator, who was known to be the only explorer who had reached the ground of Abyss. Aspiring to be like her mother, Riko, along with her friend Reg begin her journey as an explorer. From their entry into the first layer, danger follows the team relentlessly. By the end of the season, the girls successfully manage to touch the sixth layer of Abyss.
The story is continued in the feature-length film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul. Here, Ren, Riko, and Nanachi travel into the Garden of the Flowers of Resilience in the sixth layer. After conquering all the dangers and obstacles of this place, Riko and her friends finally resolve to enter the Capital of the Unreturned. Thus, the Made In Abyss Season 2 will look into the team’s adventure in the new arena yet again.
Cast & Crew Updates
According to MonstersandCritics, most of the cast members of the inaugural season will reprise their role in the new edition. To start with, Brittney Karbowski will voice Nanachi in the second season. Monica Rial and Shannon Emerick will play the roles of Mitty and Nat. Terri Doty will be playing Shiggy. Moreover, Daniel Regojo will play the part of Jiro in Made In Abyss Season 2. Kalin Coats is reprising his role as Kiyui. Lastly, John Swasey is playing Habolg, and Christine Auten is playing Ozen.
The staff names have not been confirmed by the makers just yet. The only confirm news about the team is the name of the licensor of the anime, which will be Sentai Filmworks. Moreover, the chances of Kinema Citrus backing out of the new project are quite low. The company is the homegrown production house of the franchise. Thus, fans can expect the same brilliant animation in the coming season.
Will There Be More Seasons & Films?
If fans are to judge this question on the basis of reception of the anime, then all the installments of the franchise have performed exceptionally well. The inaugural season was not only widely loved, but it was also received critical acclaim. Moreover, all three of the films have seven-plus ratings on IMDB. As for the source material, the MIA franchise has nine volumes. Most of the stories of the films are derived from original sources. Thus, the chances of seeing new films after Made In Abyss Season 2 are quite high.
But it is the series that will face trouble in the coming years. The first season used almost half of the source material in adaptation. This leaves source material for a single season. Thus, Kinema Citrus might have to come up with an original plot if they are to continue the show post the second season. Fans can also expect a fourth compilation movie after the sequel that will summarize the story for the fans.
Made In Abyss Season 2: Release Date
For now, neither Kinema Citrus nor licensor Sentai Filmworks has confirmed the release date of the second season. But the makers did confirm in May 2021 that Made In Abyss Season 2 will premiere in 2022. Since the debut season was also a summer release, the chances of a summer release date are quite high. Keep an eye on this corner to know more about the solid release date as soon as it is out.
