Fans have been demanding the renewal of Nichijou Season 2 for almost a decade now. Yet, Kyoto Animation has remained tight-lipped ever since. Well, one of the main reasons behind the delay lies in the anime’s source material. Will it ever return? Can fans save it from cancellation? Worry not! Here are the answers to all your burning questions.
Kyoto Animation’s Nichijou is an anime adaptation of a popular comedy manga series written and illustrated by Keiichi Arawi. It began serialization around late 2006 in Kadokawa Shoten’s manga magazine Shōnen Ace. Later on, the manga series was released in the form of tankōbon volumes between July 2007 and December 2015. It was adapted into a 26-episode anime series that aired in Japan between April and September 2011. An OVA episode premiere one month before the television series.
2011’s comedic anime Nichijou was loved and adored by viewers from all around the globe. Its international release around North America (by Funimation) and Australia and New Zealand (by Madman Entertainment) became commercially successful for respective broadcasters. While it received mixed reviews from viewers, the series was praised by western critics. Hence, as soon as the show ended, the demand for a second season surged.
Nichijou Season 2: Renewed Or Canceled?
For the last nine years, fans of the anime have been awaiting its sequel. However, Kyoto Animation or other companies related to its production have not confirmed its renewal. Even after all these years, Nichijou Season 2 remains a hot topic amongst otakus. The highly-rated series has a massive following that has constantly shown interest in the second installment. Yet, the studio has been apathetic towards their demands. One of the main reasons behind the same lies in the source material.
As mentioned above, the Nichijou manga series released in ten tankōbon volumes between 2007 and 2015. This implies that the manga has already ended. Hence, its anime adaptation has no content to promote with the sequel installment. Most of the anime adaptations are greenlit as a form of advertisement for their source material. Adaptations help to increase the sales of their respective mangas, light novels, or video games and act as their main source of revenue.
As a result, these adaptations only run as long as there’s content to promote. Sadly, since its manga has ended, Nichijou Season 2 does not have a purpose to return. Moreover, the anime is already a decade old and might not be able to gather enough audience again. Hence, chances for the renewal of the sequel are quite unlikely.
Is There Any Hope For A Sequel?
Can fans save it?
A few years ago, the return of anime adaptations was pretty improbable. However, with the emergence of international streaming platforms like Netflix, sequel anime installments have become quite common. The streamer has picked up a few shows on the verge of cancelation. Hence, Nichijou Season 2 still has a shot at the screens if Netflix or another production company shows interest in it.
Interestingly, in the last few years, fans of the slice of life anime have come ahead to demand a sequel. They have signed plenty of petitions to bring the series back. Hence, as long as there are enough supporters of the show, there will be hope for Nichijou Season 2.
Well, if not a second season, Netflix or another production studio might show interest in a reboot series of the show. In the last few years, several old and popular anime were brought back in the form of reboot series. This includes highly famous shows like Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket, Cardcaptor Sakura, and others. Hence, if Nichijou remains in demand, it might get a chance to return in the form of a reboot anime.
Is There Enough Source Material?
Fortunately, there is enough source material for the production of Nichijou Season 2. The manga series ran for a total of ten tankōbon volumes, out of which the anime adapted the first five. Hence, Kyoto Animation still has five more manga volumes to produce a sequel. However, if the second installment covers the remaining content, it will end the anime series for good.
Nichijou Season 2: Release Date
As of 2020, Kyoto Animation or any other production company has not shown interest in the show’s return. Even if the renewal comes this year, the anime’s production may take a while to complete. In fact, anime series nowadays can take as long as a couple of years in the making. Hence, as of the current circumstances, Nichijou Season 2 has low chances of release anytime before late 2021 or early 2022. We will update this section once the official release date is announced.
