The pilot season of Re-Main was originally announced back in March 2021. In a matter of four months, the first episode of the series landed on the television. The broader story of Re-Main follows the life of a champion water polo player Minato Kiyomizu. The anime starts with Minato waking up in the hospital one morning. As he lost all memories of his past, his friends told him that he used to be a champion water polo player. After months of therapy and rehab, he finally decided to get back to the pool.
However, Minato soon learns that his past self was arrogant and overconfident young. His friends told him that he used to take too much pride in his talents. When his memories eventually returned, all his friends and teammates discredited him for becoming the arrogant man again. However, because of the burning passion that he had for water polo, he decided to continue playing with another amateur team of Yaminami High School. The team was mediocre, yet the players were extremely helpful and supportive of one another.
In the final episode, Minato had learned his lessons, and now he faced his former team. Even though he knew that winning against them would not be easy, he still managed to enjoy the match with his new friends. In the end, Yaminami High did not win, but the experience of the game was enough for them. Now, Re-Main Season 2 will look into further journeys of Minato and his new team as they take part in more and more tournaments.
Is There a Source Material?
The Re-Main anime series is an original sports-based show by Studio MAPPA. Director duo Mashafumi Nishida and Kiyoshi Matsuda are credited as the original creators of the series. The biggest advantage of an original series is that it is not bound with the constraints of the source material. A studio can produce as many seasons as the story may demand. Moreover, sports stories often tend to last a good four to five seasons. Thus, Re-Main Season 2 certainly has a high chance of returning to the screens.
