Last week marked the ending of the fantastic series named Sonny Boy. Ever since the release of the first episode, fans have been skeptical of the direction in which the series was headed. Sonny Boy sovereignly began as an ordinary isekai anime series. However, as the series progressed, it became clear that the show was far more than just a reincarnation story. Besides the developing story, the plot was also filled with subtle commentary on the societal and social aspects of the world. Here is all you need to know about the conclusion of the first season.
Sonny Boy began airing on July 16, 2021. Written and created by debutant filmmaker Shingo Natsume, the series stretched out to be one of the most underdog performances of the quarter. Along with the brilliance of the writing, the show was also equipped with striking animation by Studio Madhouse. So, does the finale episode do justice to the build-up that followed up since the past eleven episodes? Let’s analyze the odds.
Sonny Boy Final Episode: What Happened?
The final episode of Sonny Boy began with Nagara and Mihuzo deciding that they must find a way back to the world. At the beginning of the series, almost all the students wanted to get back to their homes. But after all the chaos and confusion, most of them gave up on the idea. In the end, only Nagara, Nozomi, and Mizuho were the ones left with the will to drift again. However, Nozomi died, and the other two were left with no choice but to work together. So, they took Rajdhani’s compass and drifted once again.
Once again, they were transported back to the dark world where no light or matter existed. This time, Mizuho realized that she and Nagara had been responsible for all the drifts in the past. Thus, she concluded that they could create their own home using these powers. In the dark realm, the two students encountered their headmaster and Ms. Aki. They were reunited with Asakaze, who revealed that most of their class was misplaced and only he remained in the universe.
Ending Explained!
Cut to the final scene, Nagara and Nozomi met at the train station to bid the final farewell. Nozomi gifted him a pet bird. But he refused to take it as he was not allowed pets in the house. Mizuho was nowhere to be seen in the end. Later, Asakaze also came to meet Nagara. As they all said goodbye, the episode rolled end credits. Now, this episode of Sonny Boy was vague in many senses. For instance, how did Nagara and Mizuho get back to the real world? Was the world in the final scene actually real?
The only rational conclusion of the final scene could be that Nagara drifted to a world similar to theirs and accepted it as his new reality. The symbolism in the last episode was also keen in many ways. For example, the bird signified flight and freedom. Moreover, the train station was a symbol of the beginning of a new journey. As of Mizuho, it can be said that she went back to High School to complete her graduation that she could not finish in the sixth episode.
Lastly, Nagara said in the final cut that their lives were only the beginning. What lies ahead may take longer than this. This means that there were more drifts and journeys for him up ahead in the next season of Sonny Boy. For more such analytical articles, keep an eye on this corner.
