In a year-end survey report recently, it was mentioned that Japan was no longer the largest producer of animated content around the world. In fact, if not for the explosive release of Demon Slayer Mugen Train, the year would have been the worst year for the industry. With streaming giants like Netflix aggressively pushing the goalpost, the Japanese industry is bound to suffer. In the same chain, Disney+ brought a project that only empowered the two industries. This was the Star Wars Visions anime project. With Star Wars Visions Season 2 already under the release radar, what can fans expect from the franchise?
Star Wars Visions was first brought to light in early 2020. James Waugh, vice president of Lucasfilm, was the first to pitch the project. The idea was to culminate numerous Star Wars short stories but as anime. Independent of the chronology of the original series, Visions had a collection of itself. And so, with the help of seven Japanese animation companies, Lucasfilm was able to bring the project out on Disney+ in September 2021.
Star Wars Visions Season 2: Renewal Status
At the time of writing, there have not been any suggestions of the return of Star Wars Visions Season 2. All the nine episodes of the series came out on Disney Plus in September 2021. However, there have been no developments since then. Anime is inadvertently a studio business. Makers work with production companies to get a story adapted as an anime story. However, in the case of Star Wars Visions, multiple studios were brought in to culminate the project. Hence the renewal gets even more difficult with as many banners involved.
Thus, in order to get another season, Lucasfilm will have to contact the seven production companies yet again. This implies an even longer production process and budget. For now, it can only be assumed that Star Wars Visions Season 2 is a project that will only come out after a considerable break.
Production Hindrances
Well, production is the only factor that seems to hinder the return of an anime as popular as Star War Visions. Right from the time of the announcement, fans were excited to see the project come to life. And the series did not disappoint the fans either. But for the company to bring back Star Wars Visions Season 2, loads of effort need to be put in. For a start, all of the initial production companies may not join the project once again. Adding to this is the tight schedules under which these animation companies operate.
Lucasfilm will have to find just the right time when all these animation companies have the dates to work on the project. And since most of these banners include big names like Geno Studio, Kinema Citrus, Production IG, and Studio Trigger, it becomes even more difficult to set a definite timeline. Unless a new season is already under works, it seems a high-effort project for any company.
Plot Details!
Star Wars Visions was not based on any source material or plot points from the original story of Star Wars. The series only picked out the best creator from the world and gave them a free hand to culminate a short movie for each episode. From alternate history arcs, Clone Wars times, to future storylines, the season ended up with a mixture of many stories. So, it can be assumed that Star Wars Visions Season 2 will not be facing any issues in drawing a plot. With a story format free from any timeline or reality restrictions, a new season can tell any story of their choice.
From what the air of Reddit and Twitter discussions suggests, fans are demanding a continuation of these stories in the future. For instance, The Ninth Jedi turned out to be the most popular of all the episodes. Even though the story was complete on its own, fans look forward to the second part of it in the sequel.
Will The Creators Return?
Fans might play a big role in bringing back the second season. A series of this scale can only come back when the reception is decent. So far, the numbers of the pilot season have exceeded expectations. The IMDb score of the anime is above 7.1 stars out of 10. Moreover, around twenty-seven thousand users have rated the series above 7.2 stars. On top of this, Star Wars Visions topped many charts of the best anime of 2021. Thus, Lucasfilm might have to bank on these reception numbers and the earnings from Disney+ to get back the original team.
As for the return of the creators, it cannot be said if a similar list of animators and directors will come back to create Star Wars Visions Season 2. However, it is likely that the project will follow a similar format. Around six to seven production companies will come back to culminate a new season. Fans can also expect to see a new group of creators coming back to the screens.
Star Wars Visions Season 2: Release Date
As of the last update, Star Wars Visions Season 2 does not have a confirmed release window. Neither the makers nor the makers have given away any details of a new anime project. Also, creating a project this large would take around a year’s time. Thus, if the project sees a renewal by this Spring, fans can expect to watch the series on Disney+ by the Summer of 2023. In case of an announcement earlier than this, we will be sure to update this section. So, keep coming back to The Anime Daily.
