Just like the case of Attack On Titan, another similar studio shift was heard in recent times. Vinland Saga Season 2, the most awaited sequel of the last five years, is tracing a production change, same as Hajime Isayama’s AoT. This already seems to confirm that the second season is about to begin production. But does that mean that Season 2 was shelved all these years? Will fans have to wait a few more years to get another season? What is happening between MAPPA and Wit Studio? Let’s find out everything.
Vinland Saga is that anime series that people want to tag along with AoT. From the animations to the gritty story, the anime shares a lot in common with the latter. But still, it has teeny bits of uniqueness to it. But after almost three years, the second season is nowhere to be seen. Is there a probable quarrel in the production work? Is there a lack of source material? Before you go looking for answers in different places, we have gathered them all in one place.
Vinland Saga Season 2: Renewal Status
At the time of writing, there has been no update on the return of Vinland Saga Season 2. Neither Wit Studio nor MAPPA has given any official word on the return of the series. But this is only the news that is ‘on the record.’ Off the script, both the makers and the fans know that the sequel is nearing an official announcement soon enough. Plus, the word spread by Studio MAPPA is spreading like wildfire. Soon, all of the internets would be sharing and celebrating the first look of Season 2.
Production Details: MAPPA’s Tease
2020 marked the two-year anniversary of the Vinland Saga anime series. On this occasion, the makers made a note of sharing the details of the production with the fans. In a YouTube precap video of the pilot, the makers confirmed that Vinland Saga Season 2 was, in fact, in production. But the bigger news came this week, which not only stamped the renewal as official but it also gave away the name of the animation company that is working on the production. So, AnimeHype confirmed on February 11, 2022, that MAPPA Studio is working on the VS Season 2.
Plus, the notifications also reveal that a new teaser from the second season would be hitting the internet very soon. Fans all over the internet are excited to see how MAPPA takes up the project.
New Promotional Video Coming Soon!
Studio changes can both be hits and misses. In the case of Attack on Titan, the shift from Studio Wit to MAPPA worked wonders for the show. Meanwhile, the same was not the case with One Punch Man. Even though both Studio Madhouse and JC Staff are esteemed animation companies, the style of the latter just didn’t work for the fans. Coming to the point, AnimeHype’s update confirms that a new promotional video will hit the screens very soon. Now, the internet is divided on whether to be excited or to be skeptical of the decision.
Only time will tell what the studio change brings to the table for Vinland Saga Season 2. So far, MAPPA has never disappointed its fans. Plus, a trailer cannot tell us everything about a 24-episode series.
Expected Storylines: What Will Happen In Season 2?
Spoiler Alert: The following section contains spoilers from the Vinland Saga Manga
Beginning with the 25th episode, Vinland Saga Season 2 will have many expectations to fulfill. Being a rough adaptation of Makoto Yukimura’s historical manga of the same name. However, instead of following the story the way it is, the anime covers different arcs from it. The 24th episode (finale), “End of the Prologue,” ended with Thorfinn getting dragged away from the scene as if he was being taken away from reality. The last that we saw the main character was when he was angry in despair.
The rage of missing the opportunity of battling Askeladd was evident in the way he was resisting in the final scene. This iconic scene marked the conclusion of the first act of the anime. As the prologue ends, this will be the time for the protagonist to outgrow his nativity and confront his past. This is where the story will begin the Slave Arc in Vinland Saga Season 2.

After getting caught, Thorfinn will be sold to the slave traders only to live a life that half of the people of his kingdom have been living. ‘Humbling’ would be a softer term to use for the experience that he would have in the Ketil Farm. There, he would meet another young boy Einar who is willing to become his ally for the rest of the story. In the meantime, King Canute will continue to follow his dream for the betterment of the world. But little does he know that the Curse of the Crown is still lingering over his head.
Is There Enough Source Material?
The Vinland Saga Manga was first launched in the year 2005. Back by Kodansha, the text has gone on for more than seventeen years. As of February 2022, the manga has published 25 volumes in total. This makes a total of 190 chapters and four story arcs. Moreover, the story is yet to hit a conclusion. So, the first season was entirely based on the pilot arc, War Arc, of Vinland Saga. The 24 episodes ended up covering only the first 54 chapters of the story.
This leaves more than 136 chapters for Vinland Saga Season 2 to cover. In fact, if the sequel’s success is as big as the first one, then more renewals will not face any obstacles. Fans believe that VS can go on for more than five seasons until the end of the Vinland Arc.
Vinland Saga Season 2: Reason For The Delay
On July 7, 2021, two years after the conclusion of the first season, Twin Engine announced that the second season of Vinland Saga was in production. As the official Wikipedia page of the animation company tells us, Twin Engine has been collaborating with Wit Studio for the past many years. However, after the sudden departure of Wit, it became clear that Vinland Saga Season 2 would be shelved yet again, if not for a savior.
It became quite clear that it was Wit’s exit that caused the delay, but the reason for their exit was unclear. But fans are already aware of Wit’s history of walking away from sequels. Thus, this was no surprise at all. However, MAPPA’s arrival is also distressing as the company already has too much in hand. With Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 and Chainsaw Man anime also under it, fans fear that VS Season 2 would not get the special treatment it deserves.
Vinland Saga Season 2 Release Date
So when is Vinland Saga Season 2 Coming out? As of now, there is no official release date for VS Season 2. However, with the announcement by MAPPA, it has become easier to speculate the date. As the promotional video is on its way, it can be assumed that most of the animation work is either complete or on the verge of completion. Thus, the sequel would finish all its work by the Summer of 2022. Hence, a fall 2022 release seems more than appropriate with the current developments.
